Canadian Wine - find a great one!
Can you list five Canadian wineries I should visit?
Picking just five wineries is tough but here is my short list:
- Lailey Vineyard
- Kacaba Vineyard
- Norma Hardie
- Cedar Creek Estate Winery
- Gray Monk Estate Winery
How many Canadian wine producers is there?
There is around 500-600 wines in Canada with most of them located in Ontario
and BC.
I see VQA on many Canadian Wines, what does VQA mean?
The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) is an Appellation of Origin system by which consumers
can identify wines of Canada based on the origin of the grapes from which they are produced.
By using VQA, Canada joins other leading wine-producing countries in developing a regulatory
body that sets high standards for its wines.
Is the VQA the same for Ontario wines and British Columbia (BC) wines?
Yes, the VQA is a regulatory body that governs all of Canada's wines. The same standards
are applied to BC wines and Ontario wines. If you see VQA you now it means quality.
Where is most Canadian Wine produced?
Over 98% of wine is produced in British Columbia and Ontario. To produce VQA wines the grape
growing area has to be designated a Viticultural Area. There are only seven Viticultural Areas
in Canada and all are located in Ontario and BC. The other 2% of wine is
produced in Quebec and Nova Scotia.
How do I find a job in the Canadian wine industry?
If you have a favorite winery you should contact them first. It is also a good idea
to attend wine events in the area to meet other people in the wine industry. If you are
looking for a web resource check out
Canadian wine jobs.
What is the best grape that Canada grows?
While this is a loaded question, I would choose the riesling grape as the best
suited to Canada's current climate. German Riesling have been known as the
worlds best and Canada's climate is very similar. So it is no surprise that
Canadian Rieslings are some of the best. Check out the
Canadian Riesling Wine site for more detailed information.
Can you recommend a book on Canadian wine?
There are a few good books but to learn the basics I suggest:

They cover the basic regions and some of the Canadian wine history!
What are the top Canadian wines?
This is a very difficult question to answer! The easiest anwser is to
look at the Canadian Wine Awards
Hopefully this is a good basic introduction to Canadian wine . If you have questions
or comments send me an email from the contact page.
