Nova Scotia Wines
Are you looking for BYOW restaurants in Nova Scotia?
Check out the list of BYOW restaurants in Nova Scotia. It is small but
growing... if you know of a restaurant contact me.
Does Nova Scotia really produce wine?
It certainly does! There are quite a few wineries in Nova Scotia. There is one
wine region in Nova Scotia, it is the Annapolis Valley. The number of wineries
is small, only eight at the time of writing, but they are producing some great
wine. Visit the wineries and ask them for a wine tour!
What styles of wines are produced in Nova Scotia?
Nova Scotia whites are usually not made from Chardonnay or Riesling
grapes but instead are made from grapes like l'Acadie Blanc. Other common grapes are
Maréchal Foch and Seyval Blanc.
If you are looking for Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, or my favorite Riesling, check out Bear
River Vineywards. In 2005, they produced five wines in what could be the best growing
season in a long time.
Can you give me a list of Nova Scotia wineries?
Probably the best winery in Nova Scotia is
Domaine de Grande Pré and the most well know winery is
Jost Vineyards. Here is a list of the Nova Scotia wineries others:
When were grapes first planted in Nova Scotia?
It is possible that Nova Scotia is the oldest wine growing region in North America.
Surprised? You shouldn't be; the East Coast of Canada was one of the earliest
areas to be settled. When the Europeans came to North America they also brought
their love of wine. So what is the first thing they did? Plant rows and rows
of grapes. In fact, new research has shown that grapes might have been growing
in Nova Scotia as early as 1611!
Can you recommend a Nova Scotia wine?
It would probaby have to be the Jost Ice Wine. This ice wine is made
with the Vidal grape and has a very sweet start but finishes with enough
acidity to balance the sweetness. This wine makes a great present when you
want a wine represent Nova Scotia
Here is my first 'review' of a Nova Scotia wine, Blomidon Estate Winery's
2004 Seyval Blanc. I bought this wine in the Summer of 2007 and just opened
it February 2008. It is a fantastic wine and made even better by the pairing
with pan-fried scallops. A sweet, clean Seyval Blanc delivers zingy pears and
citrus with apricots and this wine delivers all of them. I was even able to
detect a nice 'woody' smell. If you have scallops, have this wine.
Does Nova Scotia have wine tours?
I have not heard of any oranized Nova Scotia wine tours but the wineries
are pretty close and are always happy to have visitors.
